It’s more important than ever to take care of ourselves. There are multi factors to healing. As we are all unique some things might affect us differently than others. Here are a few things that have helped me and continue to help in my healing journey. I hope these can be helpful for many of you. Always start with one and once that is concrete, add another. In no particular order!
Sleep: Sleep is the most important for our overall well-beings. Our bodies repair and heal themselves at night when we sleep. Sleeping 7-8 hours are necessary for our bodies to detox and function properly. Lack of sleep can lead to a foggy mind and a lifeless body. So making sleep my # 1 priority was the best decision I made. I suffered from chronic fatigue for almost two years and sleeping 8-9 hours helped me get my energy back and I feel so much better.
Nutrition: Nutrition is my strong point from the beginning. I love to cook and most of my meals are home-cooked. Overtime I swapped a few things for healthier options. E.g. Gluten-free flours, organic produce, whole grains, limiting processed foods.
Movement: Movement is as potent as eating good foods. Our bodies are designed to move, and sitting for long periods can cause a lot of damage. I love to walk. It is the easiest and most effective form of exercise. Just pick what you like to do and stay consistent with it. I like to do strength training and bhangra dance here and there, depending on my energy level. Always remember don’t overdo it and listen to your body.
Company: It is essential to surround ourselves with loving, motivational and encouraging people. You can only flourish in optimal conditions. Don’t be afraid to divorce toxic people or toxic environments. Pick a good accountability partner or a group. Surrounding myself with likeminded people helped me a lot with my healing journey, and life became more happy and straightforward.
Connect to Nature: We are a small part of the universe. It’s so important to maintain that relationship with nature. It heals us at a deeper level. It heals our souls. I love growing plants, listening to birds, looking at plants, trees, walking bare feet during summer on grass. The more time I spend outside with nature, the happier I am.
Purpose: Can you imagine living a life without a purpose? Waking up every day and thinking nothing to do. I believe we all have a purpose in our lives. All we have to do is pay attention to what gives us joy and aligns us with our selves. It makes our life joyful and lets us keep going in life.
Faith: Have faith or trust in a higher power. Always remember that everything is working for you, and trust the process. I love listening to prayers in the morning. It spreads positivity in me and my surrounding. Find what brings you peace and stick to it.
Serve: Belief in the power of serving. We get true happiness and joy to the heart by the act of service, charity, and volunteering. There can be so many different ways we can serve our family or community. As small as making a small meal for family makes me so happy. Giving your time to someone is valuable and irreplaceable.
Laugh: How much do we laugh nowadays? Do you know 1 generation before us laughed more than us and a generation before them laughed even more? We don’t laugh as much. One technique that we do as a family sometimes (Which we should do more often) is to start fake laughing, and eventually, fake laugh will turn into real laughter and our sadness and anxiety will start to go away.
Manage stress: We are all stressed these days, and our cortisol levels are very high. Try to find what works for you in managing stress. I like to write in a journal, listen to music or prayers, walking outside, cleaning/organizing my place, meditating etc.
All of the points mentioned earlier should ultimately help in managing stress as well.
